2009 News: Marlins Make Trade

A surprise move will move slugger Mike Jacobs to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for always needed relief help in Leo Nunez.

Jacobs, who turned 28 on Thursday, should answer the Royals' need for a proven power hitter. He had career highs of 32 home runs and 93 RBIs for the Marlins last season. A left-handed hitter, he batted .247 and had an on-base percentage of .299. The Marlins were looking for relief help, and Nunez was 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 45 games last season. He was on the disabled list from May 29 to July 21 with a strained right lat.

OUR PHILS ARE WORLD CHAMPS!

Unbelievable. The curse is broken! We'll give a huge recap tomorrow, but for now, we're speechless. This is a moment we will never forget.

Our Boy Madson!

Word is out: Madson will start the seventh inning for the Phils tonight. Charlie's pinch hitter is still up in the air. It's amazing that tonight's game will only consist of three innings.. may the best bullpen win!

Sounds Like Runs!

Due up for the Phils:

Now this lady's got heart.

This chick is my new role model. Her name is Jessie Foyle, she's a Philly native, and she's attended at least one World Series game for the last 44 years. She went to her first World Series game in 1964 and paid the outrageously low price of $8 for a ticket. This is who I aspire to be - talk about a lifetime of memories. Jessie went to the first half of Game 5, so I'm sure she'll be in the stands watching tonight. With fans like this, the Phils definitely have the edge!

Game 5: The Battle of the Bullpens

When game 5 finally resumes tonight at 8:37 pm, we'll see strategy come into play as both managers will need to work their magic. Charlie Manuel and the Phillies are 9 outs and 1 run away from winning the teams second world championship in 125 years. Joe Maddon and the Rays are on the brink of losing their first visit to the World Series if they don't come up with something fast.

Who is the pressure on? It's a good question. Many people are saying it's on the Phillies, because they do not want to head back down to Florida and face the cow bells again. We disagree. The Phillies are in a great position. They have the better bullpen and the better lineup. Here's what Charlie Manuel had to say, "I think the way it sets up right now is, we've got a good bullpen," Manuel said. "We've got 12 outs, and they have nine coming. And I feel like we feel like we're strong, and we can win, and we're going to be ready to play the game."

It looks like right handed reliever Grant Balfour will take the mound in the bottom of the 6th for the Rays. Due up for the Phillies is Cole Hamels (the pitchers spot), which will "Dobbviously" be a pinch hitter. This is where Charlie comes into play. Does he send up Greg Dobbs to get things started? He does have 22 pinch hits this season, an all-time Phillies record. Does he send up Matt "Second Facade" Stairs, or the heart of the bench in Geoff Jenkins. We say go with Dobbs. If Dobbs can get on, with Rollins and Werth to follow, we may have something cooking.

For the Phillies bullpen, they need 9 more outs. Achieving this is nothing new for the team. Due up for the Rays is catcher Dioner Navarro who is a switch hitter with a better average from the left side. Charlie will have to choose from Scott Eyre and J.C. Romero, he may choose to save J.C. for the big boys such as Carl Crawford. Don't forget "The Bridge to Lidge" Ryan Madson will be available for the 8th, and our no longer a secret, but untouchable weapon, Brad "Lights Out" Lidge for the 9th. OUR VOTE: ADVANTAGE PHILS!

Wednesday Stubs.

Advice:

If someone offers you stubs for tomorrow night, TAKE THEM.

Delayed. What do the boys have to say?

As much as we would have loved to see the game end in our favor last night, any true Phils fan knows that we have to win this Series fair and square. Here's what some of the players have to say about last night's rain:

Cole Hamels
"It was the worst conditions imaginable to try and pitch in. It's something you don't train for. You have to do your best. It's not the way you want to finish your last start of the year, but Mother Nature won. Now I have to let our bullpen and our hitters finish it off."

Pedro Feliz
"It was bad. You could see the puddles all over."

Carlos Ruiz
"It was real bad out there. The worst I've ever played in. It was very hard for Cole to pitch."

Matt Stairs
"I remember playing a game in Little League, where guys were wearing rubber boots. It's a shame we lost Cole, but we're not going to have a problem being fired up when we do play. We'll come back and the score will be 2-2. [If we win] the champagne will taste as good, maybe colder. You can't control the weather."

Brad Lidge
"You can't end the World Series and not play nine innings."

Agreed, Brad. Agreed.

Game 5 Part 2: Bottom 6, Rays-2, Phils-2. Wednesday Night.

Game Five of the 2008 World Series will not resume tonight due to inclement weather. Game Five is now tentatively scheduled to resume on Wednesday evening at 8:37 p.m. (ET), weather permitting. Commissioner Bud Selig said: "While obviously we want to finish Game Five as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening. We are closely monitoring tomorrow's forecast and will continue to monitor the weather on an hourly basis. We will advise fans as soon as we are able to make any final decisions with respect to tomorrow's schedule."

Snow? Oh no.

The crazy weather in Philadelphia may keep the World Series on hold for another day. Word is we will know by 2pm. The forecast is now calling for snow. At about 11:30 this morning, some flakes were falling at Northeast Airport in Philadelphia, according to Lee Robertson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. Stay tuned to thewebgem.com for all the details.

Go Phils!

There's Only One November?

MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig says that play will resume when he feels the weather permits, even if it takes until Thanksgiving.

"We would have gone into a rain delay, and that rain delay would have lasted until, weather permitting, we could resume the game," he said. "The game would have been in a rain delay until weather conditions allowed us to continue. And that might have been 24 hours or 48 hours or who knows?"

When play resumes...The Phillies will be batting in the bottom of the 6th inning in a ball game knotted at 2. Pitching match-ups still undetermined.

We've got to hold on just a little longer..

We've been delayed until tomorrow, sports fans.

The Phils Reign Is Delayed

Game 5 of the 2008 World Series will go down in history as the first World Series game to ever be suspended by rain. In our opinion, the game should have* been called a half an inning earlier as the rain was coming down in the form of cats and dogs. In the top of the 6th (with a tenth of an inch of water on the field) the Phillies led the Rays by a score of 2-1 before B.J. (Bossman Junior) Upton grounded a sharp ball to the usually sure handed Rollins who fumbled it on the exchange from his glove to his hand. Upton reached safely and later stole second, only to be driven home by Rays first baseman Carlos Pena to tie the game at 2.

Minutes later baseball fans and "world series viewers" saw the tarp had covered the infield at CBP, the rain delay had begun. About 25 minutes later, MLB Commish Bud Seglig annouced in a press conference that the game has been suspended and will resume from the bottom of the 6th tomorrow night (10/28) no sooner than 8 pm.
What does this mean for the Phillies? Well, it means no Cole Hamels. It also raises the question of who will pitch? Do the Phils use possible game 6 starter Brett Myers for 2 innings and hopefully turn the lights out to Brad Lidge or do they start the 7th inning off with the likes of Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson, or JC Romero? That will be up to Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubie. All that we can say in the mean time is the rain is falling and it may be for a long time to come.
Anyone have extra gave 5 tickets?

4.5 Hours Until Game Time!

No J: Let's win before we celebrate.

The city is very excited, and understandably so. We are, "as well." We're also aware of a thing called a "J." Ever heard of it? Let's not have one. So Phillies fans out there: Let's win before we celebrate. Get your rally towels out, and let's show the Rays what we've got!

Quote of the Year Candidate: Brett Myers

(After we win..) "I'm going to go on the mound and do snow angels."

Game 5: Kazmir (1-1, 4.15) vs. Hamels (4-0, 1.55)

Tonight could very well be the night. The Philadelphia Phillies are just one game (get one! get one!) away from being the 2008 World Champions.

I'm not one to "J," but you have to like our chances tonight. Scott Kazmir is no walk in the park. He's a great young southpaw, just like Cole, but Hamels has been on. The NLCS MVP is pitching lights out, and has no intentions of stopping now. "When I get on the mound, everything will disappear, and I'll have a job to do. It's a tremendous moment that not too many people have the opportunity to do," said the 24-year old left hander last night after the Phillies 10-2 win over the Rays.

1 MORE....(The Phillies lead the best of 7 WS 3-1)

Our Boy is back: And just in time!

Forget all of those strike-outs: we know from experience, and especially from last night, that when Howard is on, he is on! And what an amazing time to get back into it. The Howard that hits two homers in the World Series is the Howard that we all know is in there, and that we love to see.

Maybe it's the new tighter pants? Who knows. All I know is that between Howard, Blanton and Werth, last night was HUGE. And tonight could be, too. There's only one October.

"Due for a dong!"

Joe Blan-Ton
Joe Blanton in Game 4 was the first pitcher to hit a home run in the world series since the 1970s. Congratulations on a great game all around, Joe. "He jumped right into the Caddilac." -Gary Mattews

Game 4: Jolton Joe Blan-Ton (1-0, 3.27) vs Andy Sonnanstine (2-0, 3.46)

Our boy Joe Blan-Ton "killin it, killin it" as always.

Tonight's matchup between the Phillies and the Rays will begin on time. Can you believe it. First pitch is scheduled for 8:35 pm live from Philadelphia. Make sure you DVR Entourage, the season is getting good. Let's hope for another "VICTORYYYY!"

"Oh what a night!"

You have to love thewebgem.com! Where else can you get two very different perspectives from one brain?
Although, Natalie and I did not get to share game 3 together, our spirits did, and check out some more pictures from the crazy night at the ballpark! Game began at 10:00 and the last out was recorded just before 2 am. A hot and wet night, just how we like it.

Jayson Werth, Eric Bruntlett, and Matt Stairs celebrate at the plate
after Carlos Ruiz drove home the winning run on a dribbler to Evan Longoria.

Now we know why he's called the Flyin' Hawaiin'. The wild pitch in
the bottom of the 9th allowed baserunner Eric Bruntlett to scurry
from first to third to set up a walk of win.

The gang surrounds Carlos Ruiz after he won the game for the Phillies
in Game 3. Carlos also hit a dong earlier in the game to give the Phils a
lead which was never lost. TheWebGem.Com's player of the game.
"Sliderrrrrrrrrrrr."

What more can be said about Jamie "Gene Simmons" Moyer
this year. He has been the heart of the pitching staff.

Game Three: Natalie's At-Home Perspective

Though I had hoped to be in Philadelphia for Game 3, I ended up staying in Dayton and watching from home. The game was so emotional for me- from the moment the pre-show started to the game-winning RBI- knowing I could have been there was tough to handle. But all that aside, it was an amazing game for the club and for Phillies fans everywhere.

The guys from Tampa Bay even recognized that this was a great game of baseball. Rays Manager Joe Maddon said, "You had to love this game. I was sitting there in the dugout and thinking just that: if I'm a fan and a aficionado of baseball, it had just about everything. And it was a World Series game. What a night."

And what an awesome night for Jamie! I loved the shots of him as a kid- seems like not much has changed. Despite his earlier playoff performance, he's a great pitcher and he really came through for the Phils last night, pitching 6 1/3 with 5 strike outs. Last night must have been such a special moment for him, and for all the fans that have followed the Phils for so long.

We also have to give some love to Carlos Ruiz after tonight's game- he's done so much for the team this season. I remember poking fun at Ruiz early in the season after some of his at-bats - but he has picked up the slack for our big hitters on so many occasions this year. He's great at what he does behind the plate and such an asset to the team.

I wasn't there in person, but any true baseball fan knows that last night's game was extremely meaningful. I'm so proud of our boys and confident that they'll bring the fight tonight, as well!

My First World Series Game Since I Was 8.

Tonight, I after a little finegaling by my friend Dan was able to attend my first World Series Game since I was 8 years old. Boy, was it "Werth" the wait! We sat in section 147 row 2, which is in left center field exactly where the flower bed ends. An outstanding view of the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. It was a sweet victory, from a sweet perspective. The Phillies have now after game 3 taken a 2-1 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays. More to come in the morning. I am so proud of OUR PHILLIES!

Stay Warm, Jamie...Rain Delay at the Park.

A rain soaked night will bring a hopefully only short delay to the first pitch from Jamie Moyer in Game 3 of the World Series.

The forecast called for a 90 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service. The rain was to let up after midnight.

Both Charlie Manuel and Joe Maddon are hoping to get started somewhere between 9 and 9:30 PM. This looks to be a long and wet night.

This could be the most important game of the best of 7 series.

Will is Ready, Are You? Under 6 hours until game time.

The Rain Before Game 3: All Smiles.

You wonder if the tough loss Thursday night in Tampa Bay has gotten to the Phillies? I don't think so. During Friday's workout the team was all smiles and no worries. They are ready to play!

Even general manager Charlie Manuel is reminding his team to stay calm, cool and collected. Before the series began, word is Charlie Manuel handed out rubber ducks to his players Monday at Tropicana Field to remind everybody to stay cool.

"I think it's a matter of the guys relaxing," Manuel said. "Definitely, we've got to cut down on our swing some. We're swinging hard. That's a sign of trying too hard and trying to do too much."
